High on the mountain, the Sanctuary is a refuge where humans save dogs, who, in turn, save them. Evie has lied to gain entry, pretending to know more than she does about dogs. But once the indomitable Mrs. Auberchon lets her pass, she will find her way. This is the story of two women and a pack of dogs who, having lost their way in the world, find a place at a training and rescue center -- and help each other find new lives, new selves, and new hope.

This was a surprise of a read! This book is about second-chances at a better life, and more specially about rescue dogs who are looking for a forever home but have perhaps done things in the past that make them "unwanted." This book broke my heart! I own two dogs and I couldn't be without either of them in my life, but this book reminds us that like people, dogs deserve to be loved and needed. They need to the right person to give them the compassion they need. You learn so much about the dogs in this story, their personalities and it makes me wish I could just adopt all the homeless dogs out there.

Move over crazy cat lady status, meet crazy dog owner lady (my life's goal, clearly!)

I really wanted to like this book. I love books about self-discovery and the idea of finding oneself by working with rescue dogs seemed like a plot I would enjoy. It took me a while to read this book simply because I didn't have that normal urge to pick it up and continue reading. The characters are a bit strange - very little background information is given about the characters so you are left wondering why they are acting like they are. I kept waiting for the climax of the story-line but it never came. I enjoyed getting to know the dogs, but the human interaction was definitely lacking.
