The extraordinary story of Josephine Rimaldi spans more than seven decades, beginning in turn-of-the-century Italy, when at fourteen she is forced into an arranged marriage to a man she doesn't know or love who is about to depart for America. Bound by tradition, Josephine gives birth to seven children. The last, Valentina, is conceived in passion, born in secret, and given up for adoption. Josephine spends the rest of her life secretly searching for her lost child, even as her other children go off to war, get married, and make their own mistakes.

I found this book extremely vulgar and an affront to those of us of Italian-American heritage whose relatives, unlike those of the book, were hardworking, culturally rich and morally upright.

I loved this book. It reminded me of growing up in Toronto's Little Italy in the 50's. The guys were all on the shorter side and very much interested in getting the girls . The food was glorious and the neighbours backyards were all filled with edible stuff and pigeon coops.

There was always a lot of yelling and I learned that this was normal communication. My friends , who were Italian, lived in big multi-generational families and this book was spot on in all this.

As for the sex, well it could be heard through the open windows on a hot summer's night, before we had a.c.

Not that great of a book, it seems to me all the characters had sexual hang ups and the storyline got lost in there somewhere. Would have been nice to develop the ethnic side of this story.

Wonder why this was chosen for Lucky Day! I completely lost interest 2/3 of the way through.

A story of the many disappointments in a woman's - and her descendants' - lives.

After reading and enjoying several of her other books, this was a disappointment. Don't waste your time on this one.

I disliked this book very much. Did not finish it after half-way through. To much sexual content that I really didn't see was needed.

A huge disappointment.

This novel brings from the early 1900's to the 1970's. It is a multi-generational saga that highlights an Italian immigrant, Josephine's arrival in America and her family's quest to become fully American.
