Jean, a fortyish filmmaker who's struggling to make a feature, is married to the smoothly bourgeois Francoise, but for six years, has been brazenly carrying on an affair with the much younger Catherine, an aspiring actress. Toward Francoise, Jean is merely chilly; toward Catherine, with whom his relationship is vitally carnal, he's both verbally and physically abusive. Unable to stand his outbursts and unwilling to live in fear, Catherine leaves him, but still hopes to sleep with him sometimes.

Certainly not for everyone, but essential if you're a fan of Pialat.

This autobiographical film, by the great French director, Maurice Pialat, may be a little hard to watch. In real life, Pialat was unhappy with himself, unhappy with others, and just plain unhappy with his existence. Pialat had a mistress, Catherine; at times, Pialat was hopelessly in love with her and at other times he was a crude, violent beast, a low-life scum with her. After this relationship, he decided to make this film, perhaps to try to make amends for his behavior, perhaps to disclose what a brute he had been. Pialat forced actor Jean Yanne who was playing Pialat (name changed in the film), to be crude, cruel, and savage in his actions towards Catherine. Actor Yanne tried to soften his acting, but Pialat insisted he play the brute. Maybe the film was some kind of cleansing for Pialat. Yanne won the Cannes award for best actor of the year. This film will help you to understand other Pialat films where he portrays people dealing with demons like those that occupied his being.

A sparse story line which basically concerns a couple moving apart after 6 years of being in a mostly not so loving relationship. While I enjoyed the main characters, I found it very hard to feel any emotion about their situation, and was not saddened when the film came to an end. Didn't hate it, but couldn't love this film either.
