It's 1783, and Ross Poldark has returned home from the American Revolutionary War to find England in the grip of recession and his beloved Cornwall on its knees. His father is dead, his family's land and copper mines are in ruins, and his childhood sweetheart is about to marry his first cousin. Feeling betrayed by everything he loves, Ross must rebuild his life, embarking on a risky business venture, facing new adversaries, and finding love where he least expects it. Based on the novels by Winston Graham and set against the dramatic Cornish coastline, this striking saga stars Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) as Ross Poldark, Eleanor Tomlinson (Death Comes to Pemberley) as the fiery Demelza, and includes a special appearance by Robin Ellis, who played the original Ross Poldark in the 1970s.

King George III (1760-1820).

This PBS series is beautifully filmed and well acted. This period drama about a good man who can't stay out of trouble left me wanting more. Luckily, there is more! Put a hold on Season 3 and start watching Seasons 1 & 2! AL_CHRISTINES

This is amazing, with an excellent drama-filled plot and gorgeous scenery. Poldark is the guy who does all the wrong things for the right reasons. Season 2 is going to be awesome!

PBS Closely follows the series books. Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) stars as Ross Poldark, a redcoat who returns to Cornwall after battle to discover that his father is dead, his lands are ruined, and his true love is engaged to another. Though he is encouraged to pack up and make a new life elsewher... Read More »

I basically like all British period dramas and this continued the trend. I need to go stand on cliff in Cornwall and contemplate the beauty. Can't wait to watch Season 2.

Movies done in 1975 are quite primitive by today’s sophisticated appproach. The camera work, script , staging all somewhat stilted and overall slow moving. Lots of dialogue - more stage like. However, I got hooked on the story and people and their struggles in love and passion. costumes are fabulous. And the dramatic footage of the rugged coastline. There is much drama and history, tragedy and romance and I was drawn in. I know there is newer version out there but BBC in 1975 had a damn good thing going.

I must agree with the comments below...was looking forward to watching this series. It certainly did not disappoint! Aidan (who played Ross Poldark) was superb as well as the rest of the cast. The writing/storyline was excellent as well as the costumes (first-rate)! This is definitely a binge-watching show for sure! Am definitely looking forward the next season!

Yes it’s a Cornish soap opera and everything that can go wrong will, but I want to see how it will work out (and I know it will). The acting is good and the whole thing entertaining.

Poldark is a fascinating and beautifully done series. Can't wait to check out the books that it's based on!

Brilliant British drama. Not quite Downton Abbey but it does portray the extremes of society, namely the disparity between the rich and the poor, which has troubling parallels to our own times. Gorgeous scenery (Cornwall area) and fine acting throughout. Definitely a great television drama not to be missed.

BBC you have another masterpiece of film in "Poldark"! I loved all three dvd discs and hope season two and three are just as good as season one.

I’m usually apprehensive of television series. In my experience, they are usually overdone, highly sexualized, and push too many progressive themes whilst claiming to be true to a previous era. However, I was pleasantly surprised with this presentation. Kudos to a talented cast but more so for the protagonist. Fans of the aesthetically pleasing Aidan Turner will be highly rewarded as he is present in just about every frame. Honestly, Turner as Ross Poldark was absolutely stupendous. In the first few scenes I was curious about him being cast as the hero of the series but those misplaced concerns were quickly put to rest.

In short, Ross Poldark returns from war to find devastation. His girl, (the beautiful Elizabeth played by Heida reed) is now engaged to his cousin, his father died and his land was left savaged. As a true alpha, he takes it on himself to earn his way, while saving the future of others. He marries and eventually falls in love with a fiery red head who compliments him. All great! And romantic!!!

Now, after these exultations of said series, it's sad that I can accurately predict the rest of this series without watching any subsequent seasons. I predict future episodes will make a mockery of this debut. As usual with these things, the hero will commit adultery & push this erroneous idea that humans can not honor their marriage vows and overcome temptation. Beloved characters will be overcome by lust and illicit relationships. More people will die and illegitimate children will be born. ..And it will eventually become like what's already out there

At end of part 5:
Ross: You were right. The world is a harder place now thanks to Julia (infant daughter). The stakes are higher. Loss is more painful. Yet I would not change places with him (Dwight, young single doctor). My life is more precious for being less certain and richer for being poorer.
Demela: What does it mean, resurgam?
Ross: I shall rise again.
Demela: Shall we?
Ross: I hope so.
