I agree with Sharon. Not nearly as good as Longbourn. Nothing much happens until the last few chapters. I would rate it G. No bad language, no gore, no much sex.

I like Jo Baker's writing and had missed The Telling when it was first published in 2008.There are two stories interwoven. The modern young woman with a husband and young daughter goes to pack up a cottage in a rural village her parents owned following her mother's death from cancer. She feels the presence of the C19 young woman whose life has deeply affected the house she lived in.She is impelled to investigate the history of the house. Thus a fascinating insight is given of how The Chartists' ideas permeated throughout Great Britain's working classes through promoting the reading of books other than the Bible and the discussing of ideas. The Church played an important part in their suppression having a vested interest in preserving the status quo.

What was touted as a compelling ghost story turned out to be only shadows and mirrors. The story starts out well enough - a daughter inherits her mother's house and finds enough spooky happenings to suggest that more will finally reveal itself. But the past only comes close to speaking when the reader is sent back in time to find the truth. While the premise sounds creepy enough, it just doesn't add up. And you can turn the lights off now, nothing is going to go bump in the night.
