I think this has to be my favourite active series. Very creative world, and well drawn. Intriguing plot lines and backstories. But the real gem here are the characters themselves...it's not just one or two interesting chaps and some tropes to prop them up. All the players are interesting. Their personalities are well formed. Gripping stuff.

Wild west meets post-apocalyptic science fiction. The storyline is bleak and violent. The artwork is colorful, clean, and detailed. Read for a harrowing tale of a cast of cowboys & villains seeking justice while enduring the end times.

East of West is a gory alternate history post-apocalyptic science fiction magical epic about averting the apocalypse? Maybe? It's set on the continent we call North America. The attempted conquest of that continent by Europeans resolved very differently than in our history, leading to a Native American nation, the Kingdom of New Orleans ruled by an African-American dynasty, and a Chinese nation, among others. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are ready to bring about the end of world, except that Death has defected. He had fallen in love, married, had a child, was betrayed and murdered, and rose again to seek vengeance.

Martin's colors are stunning from the very first page, a gorgeous match for Dragotta's art. And this is Hickman at his best, telling a multi-layered story made of conspiracy and shifting allegiances, while also communicating the emotional core of each character in a large cast. It does make for a complex reading experience, especially since volumes come out once or twice a year. We've generally had to re-read at least the preceding volume each time one has been published just to remember exactly what was happening.

If you're into intricate plots and backstabbing, though, it's SO very worth it. Plus, if you start now, you can read seven volumes straight through before having to wait in agony for the next book like the rest of us!

In a bleak and violent future, the Horsemen of the Apocalypse are called to earth... but Death is not among them. Death might just be the only thing standing between the world and its certain end. Good for fans of the intersection of science fiction, supernatural, and western tales.

A good read. Very good concept.

The rangers are such a cool new element to this. And the oracle! Is it weird that I think the eyeballs are cute? Probably. But that's okay. I loved learning more about the witches backstory and their powers, witnessing them in action. This keeps getting better.

Holy crap, what is this story? This is insanely good, well told. I'll admit it was a little confusing at first the the historical alterations. But once I got the hang of what was going on, the premise was intriguing and addicting. I can't imagine where this is going to go from here but I am excited to find out.

After reading this first trade and realizing that I need to read it at least one more time, I'm intrigued enough to seek out the hardback of the the first three trades.
The artwork is beautiful.
The story arch is a little complicated hence the second read.

This series is tops on my list. I think the art is amazing, and the story telling is top notch. I read it twice with a couple weeks in between readings and caught stuff I had missed before. There is subtlety that is hard to catch in the art and in the writing. I don't think this story is just about the apocalypse, there are some underlying things going on, and I am not going to ruin it for those who have yet to read this series, or for the ones who missed it the first time through.

Half science fiction, half western, this is a story not to be missed. This work dwarfs the excellent run Hickman has had writing The Avengers, it is completely worth your time!
