This is the first book of Nora Baskin that I have read and I am now a fan. She writes as though she were a pre-teen herself, able to put the reader into the situations, emotions and thinking of a pre-teen if they aren't one themselves. This book is not preachy or "adult" in perspective, but there is much to learn from the lead character's experiences and the people in her life.
