A powerful story of love, war, and remembrance, based on the World War I memoir by Vera Brittain, which has become the classic testimony of that war from a womanѫs point of view. A searing journey from youthful hopes and dreams to the edge of despair and back again, a film about young love, the futility of war, and how to make sense of the darkest times.

Poorly scripted, poorly directed. Emphasis on prettiness. It's obvious both in speech and manner that the leading lady isn't even English. Which mattes as Vera Brittain was a famous Englishwoman, whose daughter went on to be a famous and influential politician. I think this film was meant to appeal to teenagers, such is the emphasis on attractive but dull leading players, and the over the top décor of the Brittain household. I don't mind slow-moving dramas as long as there are interesting characters and dialogue, but this moves slowly and nothing happens but emoting.

Proper British actors are given small parts. I wish we had seen more of them and less of the boring, pretty emoters.

Hard to like this film since it deals with such a horrible time of history.

Good but bittersweet film set during WWI based on a memoir by author Vera Brittan.

Commentary by director and Kit Harrington is also well worth watching.

The cast and especially Alicia Vikander (as Vera Brittain) put in stellar performances in this compelling wartime drama. The film is also interspersed with a few bits of beautiful poetry.

It's interesting that many commentators find Testament of Youth slow and boring, though in fact it is a gallop through Vera Brittain's wrenching and complex autobiography. Why? Partly because two hours and ten minutes is probably not enough time (often a longer film can feel shorter). The script is basic, plays up the romance, and plays down the brutality -- in the commentary track, the director admits the target audience is Kit Harrington's "mother", whomever that might be. He also says Vera's character was somewhat changed, because "it's so important to like her." Despite some moving scenes and performances, especially by Alicia Vikander, who resists a too-sweet interpretation of Miss Brittain, maybe that's what off about the film. It's somewhat compromised and passionless. But then, many commentators think Testament is wonderful. Maybe the director was right.

This is a 2014 British docudrama directed by James Kent, based on the First World War memoir of the same name written by Vera Brittain.
Alicia Vikander plays as Vera Brittain, an independent young woman who abandoned her Oxford studies to become a war nurse.
The first half seems slow-paced and somewhat monotonous, followed by Vera's work as a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse.
She works in London, Malta and at Etaples in France.
In August 1917 the situation of the wounded becomes very bad in France.
Due to a lack of surgeons often the nurses have to perform amputations.
Vera works in a hospital behind the frontlines, where she is first tasked with treating wounded Germans.
Although she and her superior at first seem to not care much about the wounded enemy, they later both comfort a dying German soldier.
After a big offensive the hospital is so crowded that the wounded have to lay in the mud outside.
In a huge pile of corpses Vera discovers her brother, who is still alive.
After the war, Vera becomes an ardent pacifist.
It is one of the most powerful and emotional anti-war movies ever made.

Good acting but SUPER BORING. Half way thru I found myself doing a crossword puzzle, looking up at the screen every once in a while.

Was able to view this remarkable film today on Remembrance Day. Most poignant and heartbreaking, it tells the true story of Vera Brittain and her experiences of the bloody horrors and devastation of WW1, the losses of her beloved, and pledge to never forget. "All of us are surrounded by ghosts, now we have to learn how to live with them". A most excellent and recommended film.
