From the acclaimed director of A Separation (Oscar, Best Foreign Language Film) and THE Past comes this mystery-thriller, set among a group of Iranian college friends visiting the Caspian Sea for a holiday weekend. Elly, invited as a possible romantic interest for one of the newly single men, disappears from the group without a trace. The festive atmosphere quickly turns frantic as friends accuse one another of responsibility.

Massively over-rated (IMDB 8.1), this begins to fall apart around 30 minutes in. For what seems likes ages, the adults search for one of the children in the sea; afterwards, the family bickers amongst themselves for most of the remaining film; for some reason, they all agree to tell ridiculous lie after ridiculous lie; then it is revealed that they know nothing about Elly, not even her last name (How do you not know the last name of your child's teacher?)

a suspenseful and emotionally honest film about telling lies.

Farhadi films are a 'must watch'

Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi has made two of the best art films of the last five years, “A Separation” (2011) and the “Past” (2013). I suspect the success of these two films brought about the release in the USA of his earlier film “About Elly” (2009). This earlier film “About Elly” weaves a story of terror, deception, anger, and suspense. The characters in this film find it so hard to face the truth, that they are constantly concocting lies that they do not realize just make their lives more difficult.

This is another brilliant film from the Iranian director Asghar Farhadi. It precedes his 2012 Oscar-winning production, “The Separation”, by three years but again shows his superb grasp of psychological drama. Here, the story focuses on a group of friends who are away for a weekend at the seaside and their responses when one of them, Elly, goes missing and is believed to have drowned. It maps the remorse, anger, blame and recriminations that arise after the event and the tangled web of consequences that come from not telling the truth. This intelligent and insightful film also demonstrates that people’s range of responses to tragedy is very similar the world over, irrespective of country or culture.

An excellent Iranian film showing how people react under stress and how little acts can having huge unintended consequences. Still it's always hard for me to airbrush out those head scarfs that women don't wear in private in the real world but still have to wear in films.

The mysterious disappearance of a kindergarten teacher during a picnic in the north of Iran is followed by a series of misadventures for her fellow travelers. This was a nice foreign film with English subtitles. Has some cultural base to draw from if you have interest in that part of foreign film.
