The first third of the book is not necessarily terrible. But once we get to Berlin, we're treated to a sizable cast of nothings: no personalities shine, and indeed characters are pretty swappable, with no real defining characteristics and no sense of life beyond the pages of the book. It's swamped with a lot of cliche. The plot twists can be seen from several miles away if you're paying even a modicum of attention, which is dreary. For being what should be fun thriller mystery, it just falls so flat and boring, and it isn't any fun trying to figure out who Velvet is because all the characters are so interchangeable.

A gripping spy thriller. Couldn't put it down.

A girl spy in WWI! Sounds like a premise for a fun novel--and it is. I won't go so far as to say this is even remotely credible--everything about it feels sort of oversimplified--but I was kept entertained, and was also kept guessing about the identity of Velvet (the spy that the protagonist is sent undercover to extricate). If you're looking for a better, heavier, more heart-wrenching look at espionage in wartime for a YA audience, try Elizabeth Wein's spectacular Code Name Verity--but if you're a fan of the genre and want something a bit lighter, this is still worth your time.
