There isn't anything uplifting about this entire film or cast. Fate has two addicted gamblers meeting in a card game. They don't know each other's name but they have the same DNA and are on the same road to destruction, walking side-by-side. Neither of them has anything of value within themselves and have turned to gambling on a near-death-experience. Both have lost their families because no one can live with this constant risk upon risk upon risk behavior What makes them a pair is recognizing themselves in the other guy. "Boy. There is something very sick inside your head. Get away from me!". Unfortunately, some people do live this way. The turn of a card determining their entire future is not a good way to live. I will say one good thing here is that the stars are not the 'larger-than-life' stars who we feel compelled to support in whatever they do.

I hadn't heard a whole lot about this film- just a couple of good notices here and there- so I was pleasantly surprised that this was a good film, more of a character study really about two scrappy gamblers down on their luck.

This was quite an enjoyable movie- I found it to be an entertaining character study of two not so successful gamblers. The film has an ambling structure which provides many twists and turns, though the film does lose steam towards the end. In some ways this is a companion film to the Robert Altman movie " California Split " made in 1974. It's worth watching for Ben Mendelsohn's irascible performance alone.

Junk. Slow. No story. corny acting.

In the special features, the filmmakers described their desire to create a throwback '70s "buddy" movie with this one, and as unlikely a pair Mendelsohn and Reynolds are, the chemistry works. I thought the whole package was well put together.

Hey, don't listen to the haters. The negative reviews are way off the scale. Unbelievable. I don't get it! // I just saw this in the bin at library, so I checked it out. Having pre-judged it by all the negative reviews, I was surprised how good it actually is. Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds are kick-** . Story is good; location shots are très atmospheric and funky; and the blues music soundtrack is phenomenal. // Mendelsohn, who is Australian, is an edgy wonder as a clueless yet charismatic loser from Iowa.

Ryan Reynolds was completely unlikable. Hard to believe but true. Other than gambling addicts, I can imagine who would like this movie. Two men determined to ruin their lives and hurt the women who love them get themselves beat up--intentionally. I'm never taking another recommendation from hammer59

great character study of two sad, down and out gamblers. I thought it was going to be predictable at first but it took a turn in a different direction, and one of which I wasn't clear on, which left me a bit confused as to status of these characters. I also wished I knew more about Reynolds character background, because I think it might have helped to understand why he was the way he was but there was no explaination as to what happened, which left me even more confused about the ending otherwise I would have given it more stars. But Mendlesohn and Reynolds had great repoirte which kept me watching and wondering.

Not a bad movie. A little off-beat but good.

Gambling kinda creeps me out, but watching compulsive gamblers much more so.

Original film, unpredictable and engrossing. Deals less with gambling than the human condition.

Very interesting, and well made.

- I can tell you that Marion Robert Morrison was born in Winterset, Iowa, 1907.
Am I supposed to know who that is?
- You might know him by his stage name, John Wayne. John Wayne. I can also tell you that Iowa is the only state in the country that begins with two vowels.
