A Nancy Drew for grownups, slow paced and thoughtful, right down to making Morse code messages with a nail file to signal for help.

Book 22 in the Daisy Dalrymple series

Above-average British historical mystery (1920s). Character-driven, rather than plot-driven - although I thought the plot was good. Daisy is portrayed as effortlessly charming person -- someone who naturally inspires trust. The chaos her "interference" in murder investigations causes among police units is the main source of humor. Could appeal to fans of Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series although the style is warmer and more relaxed. Interesting comments by other readers. Sounds like some in series are faster paced.

Nice little British cozy. I enjoy the kindness of the main characters toward others, wish that were still true today. This one does not seem to be as fast paced as her others and there seems to be many more mistakes as if Ms. Dunn is using a ghost writer and sentences are cut off or inserted out of place. Still a very nice cozy.

I have read every book in the Daisy Dalrymple series, and I have enjoyed them all. Some are better than others, but I think the books keep getting better the longer the series goes. Did you know there were 2,000,000 more women than men in Britain after WWI? Hence the term "superfluous women" or "surplus women" who could never hope to marry and have children. This book has many plot twists, and Daisy continues to be a most engaging heroine. I really enjoyed this book!
