He's the star who provides the most laughs per gallon. He's Herbie, the lovable car with a mind of his own. Dean Jones, Michele Lee, and Buddy Hackett join Herbie in this revved-up comedy classic. Jones plays down-on-his-luck race car driver Jim Douglas, who reluctantly teams up with the little machine. Douglas thinks his sudden winning streak is due to his skill, not Herbie's. He finally realizes the car's worth when a sneaky rival plots to steal Herbie for himself. But it's Herbie who'll steal your heart in this wildly fun roller-coaster ride you'll never forget!

Classic! A a car loving family, I am surprised we don't have a copy. My boys love this story, as do the parents. One of the few stories that protrays the love a person can develop for a vehicle ;) and it would be a dream come true for my boys if they were to come across a car like Herbie!

One of the few films that have Asian positive supporting character (sponsor) that actually moved on up.
Loved the visual gag of antagonist slow-rolled at gas station while protagonist get the Indy 500 pit-stop treatment. Man, that must have taken some practice.

This is a fun family comedy about a 1962 40 HP VW Beetle with a major personality, named "Herbie", and his three human friends, Jim, Carole, and Tennessee. The primary setting is San Francisco and extending to other parts of northern California. Enjoyable viewing both for kids and adults. For the boomer's who missed it when it was shown in the theaters in 1969, this DVD presents a great opportunity to see the fun you missed. For the younger folk, this 1969 Disney story still plays well, especially b/c of the continuing popularity of driving restored pre-1976 air-cooled VW Beetles. For the film buff, and the car buff, the extra's on the DVD set show how the stunts, sound effects, and other special effects were performed. Back in 1969, computers weren't available for this function, so there was a whole lot of inventive improvising done by the Disney team. And for the most part -- while some of the effects might seem a bit corny today -- the Disney team's hard work on this film paid off in spades. Very much recommended.

A movie that the whole family can actually watch - without foul language. Very funny and still holds up today.

Tennessee : "Jim, it's happening right under our noses and we can't see it. We take machines and stuff 'em with information until they're smarter than we are. Take a car. Most guys spread more love and time and money on their car in a week than they do on their wife and kids in a year. Pretty soon, you know what? The machine starts to think it is somebody."
