Serafina, Neela, Ling, Ava, Becca, and Astrid, six mermaids from realms scattered throughout the seas and freshwaters, were summoned by the leader of the river witches to learn an incredible truth: the mermaids are direct descendants of the Six Who Ruled-powerful mages who once governed the lost empire of Atlantis. The ancient evil that destroyed Atlantis is stirring again, and only the mermaids can defeat it. To do so, they need to find magical talismans that belonged to the Six. Serafina believes her talisman was buried with an old shipwreck. While researching its location, she is almost discovered by a death rider patrol led by someone familiar. . . . The pain of seeing him turned traitor is devastating. Neela travels to Matali to warn her parents of the grave threat facing their world. But they find her story outlandish; a sign that she needs to be confined to her chamber for rest and recovery. She escapes and travels to Kandina, where her talisman is in the possession of fearsome razormouth dragons. As they hunt for their talismans, both Serafina and Neela find reserves of courage and cunning they didn't know they possessed. They face down danger and death, only to endure a game-changing betrayal, as shocking as a rogue wave.

I loved the first book and even though this one wasn't as exciting it was still great. A must read!!!

I liked the way that this book started, because I read it without reading the first one. I found that it was very easy to jump right onto the plot without too much major confusion. However, the amount of characters was a bit harder to grasp at as all the names are very unique. I wonder how the author came by all the fascinating and somewhat scary creatures in the book. Maybe research? Or did she make them all up? That would be very interesting indeed. The plot was easy to follow throughout, with the classical twists and turns that leave readers up to their imaginations. The ending just didn't hit it off with me too well though. ( I actually didn't think of that possibility! ) 4/5 stars.

After the six mermaids were reunited, they were informed with the shocking truth that they are the descendants of powerful mages and have the capabilities to find the talismans in order to defeat the evil that destroyed Atlantis long ago. Told mostly from the point of view of Serafina and Neela, the two have a hunch about the whereabouts of their talismans and goes out to find them. Serafina travels to an ancient shipwreck and is heartbroken upon discovering a traitor in her midst while Neela goes against terrifying dragons. I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel and I feel like it lived up to its previous installment. The characters were developed further in this novel and the relationship between the protagonist and her love interest also deepened which was interesting to read about. There were intense moments and unpredictable twists which made reading this book a pleasure. Overall, it was a great read that I would definitely recommend. This mermaid novel was a gripping read. I loved how the author described the world of Miromera in detail. The human-mermaid parodies were cute. The characters have distinct flaws and strengths.

Some small romance; nothing too drastic.

Overall, I give it 5 stars.
