Based on Lady Susan, Love & Friendship is hilarious, a word not often used to describe an Austen film.

too much Jane Austen, not enough Whit Stillman, but the production values, acting, cinematography, costumes, sets, are superb

I loved this film, as I love both Jane Austen and Whit Stillman and they go together like peanut butter and jelly. Don't expect a laugh-out-loud comedy, but expect lots of Austen & Stillman wit. All the actors are great. *However*, a warning:

I watched this DVD on my blu ray player and about 20 minutes in, the audio stopped and I got the following warning on my screen: “Audio outputs temporarily muted. Do not adjust the playback volume. The content being played is protected by Cinavia and is not authorized for playback on this device. For more information, see Message Code 3."
I couldn't finish the film on the library's DVD copy; luckily, it was (and is currently, as of 11/27/18) streaming on Amazon Prime.

I gave up after the first 12 minutes. This movie is astoundingly terrible, and Stillman -- whose previous work I've enjoyed minus some hesitations about the boys' club known as "Barcelona" -- shoulders the blame. Beckinsale, in the lead role, comes across like Joan Collins-lite, but what really turned me off were the on-screen character titles and summaries that Stillman imposes over everyone -- as if we, the dunce caps in the audience, couldn't work to puzzle out relationships between personae. Incredibly lazy filmmaking. Sevigny does a nice job, from what I saw; she's such an underrated actress.

Based on one of Austen’s lesser-known works, the novella “Lady Susan”, this is an enjoyable diversion. It is full of the expected well- turned lines, like this, my favourite:
[Lady Susan to her conniving American friend who has married a wealthy Englishman]
“You made a mistake in marrying Mr. Johnson. Too old to be tractable and too young to die.”!

Not a great movie - more a vehicle for a few pithy and witty lines. Strictly for the Austen fan who has run out of Austen.

Jane Austen fans may relish this period piece, adapted from her less known novel, however others may find it a soul-less snore fest. Banter that lacked wit, lovers who lacked passion and a flick that should have paid as much attention to direction as it did to costume design. Unfortunately, even the star line up of acting talent could not salvage this shipwreck.

Really witty, clever movie. I thought it was a great adaptation of Austen's short novel.

Too many characters that I do not care about, and too much chatter between them. Kate Beckinsale should have stuck to the "Underworld" movies because at least then she was interesting.

If you remember the 90s (Well, then you weren't there man! Oh wait, that's the 60s.), you remember that the hottest author for a while was one who'd been dead for over a century and a half. We saw adaptations of "Pride and Prejudice," "Emma" (Three versions!), "Persuasion," "Sense & Sensibility," and "Mansfield Park." She has a small body of work (6 novels), but filmmakers are still finding inspiration from her work. Whit Stillman's generically titled "Love & Friendship" is an adaptation of a short early novel called "Lady Susan," which was published posthumously. Stillman's films are all comedies of manners ("Metropolitan," "Barcelona"), so it's unsurprising that he'd be drawn to Austen. I love Austen, but I rarely love her movies, which too often miss the sharp, satiric tone of her work. "Love & Friendship" is a typical Austen adaptation in that it's pretty, well-acted, and a little dull. Kate Beckinsale as Lady Susan gives one her most robust, funniest performances in years and is the best thing about the film. Chloe Sevigny co-stars and this is a reunion of sorts, as the two actors co-starred in Stillman's best film, "The Last Days of Disco." Enjoyable enough and much better than his tone deaf and excruciating previous film "Damsels in Distress."

Sadly awful. I expected better. Exceedingly boring. Because the novel was published when Jane Austen was very young, it is lacking in the character and style that we love about her. The movie is a disappointment.
