I remember loving this series as a teen: the descriptions of the world are astonishingly good--practically Redwall levels. There's a real lyrical sense to it, and the blending of myth and reality is excellent. But overall it didn't age well from my middle school years. It's drowned beneath the sheer incompetency and jerkiness of its protagonist. He has huge expectations for his life, but does nothing. Everything happens around him, and he's dragged unconscious from scene to scene, and then later we're told something happened. During the few times he's conscious, he dithers and dathers about using his vague "powers," and dithers and dathers so long that deus ex machina must occur or else the characters will literally die from his incompetency and delays. Most of the problems are just solved by someone else. Meh.

Great Story. Though a little too much messages of flaws than the good traits.
