I can't think of too many bands who worked so hard to define their sound (and the sound of an era) and than squander it the way Metallica did. Their initial run of albums is unimpeachable and then. . .Well, who knows what happened in the 90s. Load/ReLoad, line-up ships, band drama (as captured in the exhausting documentary "Some Kind of Monster), whatever the hell St. Anger was. Like many fans, I want them to be good again, but, realistically, can they ever be as good as Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets? Hardwired isn't bad, but with 12 songs spread out over 2 discs (and a bonus disc), it lacks the lean, tenacious power of their best work.

Only for fans of the Black album/Load/Re-Load - era's. There are SOME hints of their earlier thrash metal work, but not enough for me to purchase a copy. I only liked a handful of songs from this TWO CD release - Hardwired, Atlas, Rise!, Moth into Flame, Halo on Fire, Spit out the Bone.

I was excited for this album, hearing reviews about being back to And Justice days and enjoying Moth and and Hardwired songs, but those songs and maybe a couple of others are the highlights. That said, it's still a notch in the right direction above Magnetic and maybe I just long for the energy of Master; which I understand is silly because how can these boys keep that much energy at their age.

This is a killer record. Probably the best they have released since the Black album in my opinion. It is a lot of fun, it seems even the band was having fun on this one. Highly recommended, even for the casual metal fan.
