As heir to a title and great wealth, Will Masterson should have stayed home and tended his responsibilities. Instead he went to war. Now, after perilous years fighting the French, he intends his current mission to be his last. But all his plans are forgotten when he arrives in the small mountain stronghold of San Gabriel and meets her. Knowing herself to be too tall, strong, and unconventional to appeal to a man, Athena Markham has always gloried in her independence. But for the first time in her life, she finds a man who might be her match. Two of a kind, too brave for their own good, Athena and Will vow to do whatever it takes to vanquish San Gabriel's enemies. For neither will back down from death, and only together can they find happiness and a love deeper than any they'd dared imagine.

I randomly picked up this book and gave it a quick read.

I rather enjoyed how much detail the author put into the details of the kingdom of San Gabriel and the engineering work they did around the kingdom. Sofia and Justin are just too cute together, I wish there were more scenes with them.

As for Athena and Will. I admire Athena for her independence and determination (in saving and preserving San Gabriel and Sofia from further harm from the French soldiers). But she constantly puts herself down about her past (illegitimate) and obsesses over Will. Will isn't too bad, he doesn't care about Athena's parentage and is genuinely interested in the well beings of the people, but he is definitely atypical of most lords in England (not much would be so caring and considerate like him).

They are pretty stereotypical characters with fairly predictable plot line. Good for quick read but otherwise not very memorable.
