Illegal drugs and male prostitution within the first few pages. Not sure how this gets labeled as "Young Adult." Definitely not a series for me or my teens.

On my first day at RDPL for my practicum, I saw Wings on a shiny new display. Phoenix was right below it, tucked away neatly.... waiting for me. Intrigued, I put Black City on hold.

The reaction I have had to this trilogy rivals my obsession with Cruel Beauty and Red Queen!

Black City by Elizabeth Richards is a twist on the traditional vampire - human love story.

There are four species/races:

Humans ~ [Sentrys are the elitist humans, the politicians and rich citizens of the States. Workboots are the normal or poverty-stricken humans]

Darklings ~ [Basically Vampires and Angels mixed together]

Lupines ~ [Werewolves]

Bastets ~ [Basically extinct, a variation of the cat or lion gods from Egypt]

Picture a black city overruled by a religious dictator, who has decreed that one race will rule all. Humans, Darklings, Lupines and Bastets all live together in the United Sentry States. Sentry humans have overthrown the rest of the population under the guidance of the dictator Purian Rose. Darklings have been segregated behind the walls that divide each city, and are known as demons who have been sent to destroy the human souls.

Ash is half-human, half-Darkling. He lives with his father on the Sentry-side of the wall, and sells his venom to help support his sick Darkling mother. Because he is only part Darkling, he was born with no heartbeat. Stuck living an empty life, Ash searches for something more...

Natalie is a Sentry human being. Darkling murdered her father and injured her sister when she was a child, and Natalie fears and hates the demons beyond the wall.

Thrown together in a novel of forbidden romance, danger, and persecution, Ash and Natalie face the challenges of listening to your heart and following your destiny.
KC Rating: 4/5

Mix all the facts from history's Nazi Germany, add a pinch of the Berlin Wall and two cups of fantasy/paranormal romance together... and I give you Black City.

There are a few things that keep this book from coming to a full 5 stars. The author's use of spelling out sounds, using Fragg as a swear word, the typical and repetitive phrases like "cornflower-blue eyes" and the innocent virginal girl who falls in love with the monster took away a star. The amount of times I rolled my eyes took away that star.

But I am half-way through the third book... and believe me. This series is worth the read. Ignore the hiccups along the way of author, and fall in love with the Black City trilogy.
Not to mention that the covers are stunning! They are the only reason I picked up these books!

Very good book. It shows that love is very, very powerful and irreplaceable. It shows that there are some people out there that want power and a perfect society, they would do anything. Very good book.

BLACK CITY ended the war a year ago. Darklings and humans were segregated. The Darklings were sent to the Barren Lands to die. NATALIE BUCHANAN is the daughteer of the Emissary. She desperately wants to go into politics, but her mother changes her application so her friend, Craven, can "pull some strings" to get Natalie into science. Except she doesn't want to experiment on rogue Darklings to cure the Wrath. She thinks of it as torture instead of research. ASH FISHER is a rogue Darkling until his dad gets him an identity bracelet. He has gone from son to pet in a matter of minutes. The next day, Emissary Buchanan comes to the school and makes an announcement: Anyone who commits a "Capitol crime" against the Sentry States will be executed in the square. THEY do the most dangerous thing possible:They fall in love. Neither will admit it, but they can't keep away from each other. ASH FISHER is blamed for a crime that he didn't commit. He is blamed by the Emissary for the murder of Chris Thompson, when Chris really dies of a Haze overdose. NATALIE BUCHANAN finds out that a new kind of Haze, The Golden Haze, is killing Haze addicts if they have more than a drop. She must figure out what in it can be so deadly before it kills everyone. ASH FISHER must stay alive after he and Natalie kill Gregory Thompson. Gregory was a Tracker, and it is a Capitol offense to kill a Tracker, and one of them must die for it. Black City is an absolutely amazing story in an amazing world with great characters. I can't wait for the sequel, Phoenix!
