Sorry all you movie buffs... this movie didn't rate one single star, not even one arm off a starfish. This movie left me treading water for so long that I finally gave up and swam back to shore after 25 minutes. Don't waste your time floundering on the shoals. Casey Affleck's acting was about... I was very disappointed in this film. I felt like I wasted two hours on this one. Pretty bad language and very little plot.

A solid and well made film. Kenneth Lonergan's (the writer and director) experience as a playwright comes through in the literary quality of the movie. Michelle Williams was wonderful and unfortunately a little underused. A great comeback for Lonergan after 2000's You can Count on Me.

A powerful and profoundly moving psychological masterwork. A father's incautious behavior results in a devastating tragedy, after which his personality radically changes into such depressive behaviors as social isolation, deadened emotions, menial employment, and various other forms of self-punishment such as starting fights he will surely lose. Life events then occur that make demands of him which he is unable to meet because of the psychic damage he has incurred. Choked-back words and feelings struggle for expression but are too massively painful, or too hard to explain, to come out. Keep a hanky handy. And yet the film itself is not depressing, in fact at turns funny and charming in ways all should be able to relate to.

Numerous scenes of raw emotional power, as well as charm and high artistry, are likely candidates for re-watching. Ensemble performances by Casey Affleck (Academy Award Best Actor), Michelle Williams, and Lucas Hedges worthy for study in a master acting class.

It continues to amaze me when some individuals (commenters below) are simply incapable of appreciating what's before them, even though I know it should no longer surprise me.

Typical pointless US movie.

This dramatic movie tells the story of a man named Lee Chandler, who is shocked to discover that his late brother made him the guardian of his teenage son. Taking a brief break away from his janitor job, he returns to the hometown of where his family has lived for generations and must face the demons that he left behind. The movie stars Casey Affleck, who delivers a very emotional and personal performance that captivates you throughout the film. I felt like this was a very profound and enjoyable film that brought many feelings and emotions to light that we never really think about. I would rate this film 5/5 stars. @The_Reviewer of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

A very well made, worth watching film. I find most of the movies in the last few years to be either mostly superficial, overly dramatic, or just made in poor taste. The comedies are, well, just bad. So when I stumble upon a movie that is recent AND good, I'm surprised. This film is one of those exceptions. My only warning , if you choose to watch it is that the story is extremely sad, and tragic.

Not to our taste. Superfluous profanity does not a good movie make.

I have to say I'm quite astonished by the vitriol that this film is receiving in some of these comments. Is it because the film deals in a heavy emotional dilemma that has no easy fixes or answers- and that it does it in a way that is solemn using flashbacks and humor? All I can say is that the movie is definitely touching a nerve- something which indicates the film is successful on many levels.
If you've never seen an art film or " indie " film before, you might want to skip this movie as it requires some critical thinking in watching it.
The first time that I saw this film, I felt as if it was a bit overwhelming. I left the theater puzzled as to why it got such rave reviews. My initial thoughts were that it was too long, boring, and very depressing. With that said, I decided to give it another chance, and I'm extremely glad I did. As for those wondering why I would want to subject myself to a film that I initially didn't like for a second time; it's because I like to keep an open mind. In the case of this film, I really wanted to get a better understanding of what it was all about. Having seen it again, I was better able to grasp the complexity of the characters. If you absolutely hated it, I can understand your feelings. You might, however, want to give it another chance, as in the end my verdict is that it's a masterpiece. It's not a funny film, but it's down to earth and real.

Slow moving, working class families, dark, depressing, relevate, someone filled with quilt, dysfunction, hits home for some - good acting..........

A rich and powerful masterpiece starring Academy Award winner Casey Affleck as a working-class man overpowered by love and loss. Skip this movie if you have the attention span of a gnat.

What was the point of this film? It literally tries to portray what it's like in real life for someone dealing with the death of their brother, but fails in any way to be realistic, which it believes it is. Don't waste your time with this debby-downer that has no conclusive ending. This is a waste of time, money and effort although the music was fantastic!

Written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan in 2016, this American drama depicts the tragic death and its aftermath.
Although the performances of the major actors appear great, the film seems too downbeat and too slow-paced.
I just don't like this kind of bleak film.

You're rude, you're unfriendly, you won't say good morning.
So I can go?
-Unless something else comes up we don't know about already, yeah.
Let me finish. heart was broken. 'Cause it's always going to be broken. And I know yours is broken, too.
Break it up. Get him out of here, George. He's Joey Chandler's brother. Back off, back off.
Why can't you stay?
-Come on, Patty. I can't beat it. I can't beat it.
If there was... If you could take one guy to an island with you and you knew you'd be safe 'cause he was the best man, he was going to figure out how to survive, he was going to make everything,
he was going to make the world a good place on the island, he was going to keep you happy, he, he... This is the best man for the job. No matter what, if it was between me and your father, who would you take?
... And we don't know what's going to happen to you, yet. But it's not a good disease.
-What is a good disease?
Poison lvy. Athlete's foot.
