This the most difficult read I can recall for a book where I soldiered on to the end despite feeling assaulted. First I tried the print book and I couldn't get the voice so I moved to the audiobook. I encourage readers to read The Guardian review.

The book takes place in the course of about two hours. A stand-up comic in a club in Netanya is not very funny. With demented glee he harangues, harasses and bombards his audience with coarseness and a few funny jokes and bit by bit his autobiography. What happened to him is a looming presence. I stayed with the book because I just had to know where it would go.

A standup comic in his fifties, successful enough to have a following but not quite enough to cover his child support payments, brings a few old friends to join the audience for the show of his life (literally). The entire novel takes place over the course of a standup show, and it's riveting. Jessica Cohen's translation from Hebrew earned a well-deserved spot on the longlist for the Man Booker International prize. Excellent job by the audiobook reader, too, with all the different voices and tricky accents.
