Shirley MacLaine is everything. Her role in this film is exactly the kind of role model girls and women the world over need. The final speech by Amanda Seyfried's character seriously sums it up when she says that Harriet Lauler only ever saw the best in everyone and wanted them to become their best selves - and Harriet Lauler's speech to the at-risk girls really showed that, too. While Harriet comes across as someone very hard to deal with, it does not come from a bad place - she truly does expect the best from people as she gives them nothing less. Harriet Lauler is seriously one of the best female characters I have come across and that comes down to seriously great writing and amazing acting from Shirley MacLaine.
