Nikki Heat and Derrick Storm, New York Times bestselling author Richard Castle's most enduring and beloved characters, team up for the first time to save Nikki's mother, Cynthia, who has been in hiding (and presumed dead) for 17 years. Standing in their way is a nefarious group of Chinese businessmen known as the Shanghai Seven, who have the resources-and ruthlessness-to stop them.

One wonders if there'll be more Nikki Heat books to come, now that the television series Castle is over. If not, this book by "Richard Castle", or whoever actually writes them, seems to tie things up nicely, picking up right after the ending of the previous books. Heat, Rook, and spy/ private investigator Derrick Storm and his father are all caught up in a case mixing together an escaped fugitive, a Chinese crime syndicate, and Nikki's back from the dead mother. I like how the writer switches voices as Heat and Storm handle their sides of the investigation, and brings things to a thrilling close.

Pure entertainment, except for a little part at the end (see below). I have to confess I haven't read the Derrick Storm books or watched any Castle episodes, but I have really enjoyed all the Heat novels after stumbling on the first one by accident when it first came out. This is vintage Heat - and really fun to read. The juxtaposition of Heat and Storm, two really different characters to manage stylistically, is very well done and a lot of fun. Throw in Heat's mother, thought to be dead for so many years, and Storms father, a real vintage character, along with Rook and Roach and it's a unique and fun ride. The plot is interesting and briefly described in the book summary from the Library. I will admit that the last 30 or so pages do have a hint of current political behavior in them, though I doubt with publishing schedules that is anything more that incidental. Oh, and Castle very overtly says the Heat/Storm partnership will appear again. Wonder how Nikki's husband, Rook, will deal with that. Enjoy!
