“Stay with Me is a wise and deeply humane debut novel that unpeels the layers of politics in a marriage from the inside. Ayobami Adebayo tells the story of Akin, Yejide, and their families—a powerfully affecting tale of love, loyalty, and betrayal—with both savagery and heart. I can’t wait for re... Read More »

Absolutely loved this book. I listen to the audible while I drive. And the narrator made this so real for me. Love love love this book. I really enjoyed it. I could not stop listening finished in two days.

Excellent book. Love getting to know other cultures through good quality literature. This book is a perfect example of that. Highly recommend. It’s one of those books that you anticipate coming back to after dinner.

A heartbreaking story of a Nigerian couple’s desire to have children. Complicated by infertility and the Nigerian custom of taking a second wife to have children, interference by well-meaning family members, the death of children and the fear of facing a third child’s death sends the wife, Yejidi, away to lead a new life. The ending is masterfully written and brings closure to her empty life.

I don't know what it is about Nigeria, but has been fertile ground from writers going back to Chinua Achebe, whose "Things Fall Apart" is often the gateway to African literature for Americans. Other notable writers include playwright Wole Soyinka and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Ayobami Adebayo joins this illustrious company with her strong debut novel, which is about marriage, politics, family, and polygamy.

This is a book about a marriage, looked at in universal ways that many people can relate to but also from the more cultural views of a Nigerian couple. It deals with a lot of issues and will evoke many strong opinions and emotions in you when you read it. I thought it was quite good and I will look for more work by this author in the future.

Yejide and Akin are husband and wife who’s lives become entwined in lies, loss, and polygamy. Narrated by Yejide and Akins own opinions of how their story came to be, make for a unique read.

Bailey's short list. Adebayo can certainly tell a story. However, this novel, narrated alternatively by a husband and a wife, raises the issues of polygamy and the necessity to have children, outside the context of patriarchy. The story does not really display any broader understanding beyond the events.

Stay With Me was one of my favourite works of fiction in 2017. I haven't yet read a book by a Nigerian author that hasn't been completely satisfying! Ayobami Adebayo's debut novel is a compelling narrative that deals with the many, many intricacies of marriage and parenthood within the context of 1980s Nigeria. This novel may be triggering for those who have dealt with infertility or infant loss, but on the other hand, it may be comforting to recognize your own experiences in this narrative. I look forward to reading more from Adebayo.

Compelling portrait of marriage and a woman's life in Nigeria. Fabulous characters.
