I enjoyed this mini-series very much. The acting, and the directing is very good. The story effortlessly flows from episode to episode.

Re-invention is very right, as if the original wasn't good enough? If you don't expect it to be about the original it is ok

I enjoyed this series, sort of a mash-up all Dickens novels combined together into a single story. It consists of 20 half hour episodes. I have read most Dickens novels, so was familiar with most of the story lines, but had to look at the Wikipedia entry “List of Dickensian Characters” when someone new entered the story--what book are they from? It starts with characters we all know, someone murders Jacob Marley—Scrooge’s business partner and Inspector Bucket is the detective on the case. A brother and sister have a falling out after their father dies. Most of the property goes to the woman (Amelia), don’t think we learn of Amelia and Arthur’s surname until episode 3—the Havishams of “Great Expectations.” Amelia’s dear friend is Honoria Barbary of “Bleak House.” Inspector Bucket early on suspects Bob Cratchit. So, most of the Dickens characters make an appearance. I recently watched “Bleak House” on DVD with Gillian Anderson (available at SPL) which is very good, so you might want to watch some DVDs or read some books before you venture into this series, but might also be inspired to read some Dickens novels after watching the series!

This series brings together characters from Dickens novels and invents new stories for them.
Superb acting and absorbing plot. You don't have to know any of Dickens' work to enjoy this series, which is perfect for bingeing.

Brilliant costume design, set dressing spectacular, plot interesting, characters are fascinating, funny, sad, maddening, and frustrating in turns. You don't have to have Dickens to enjoy this, but you do have to like a good period piece.

A must see for Brit-Lit fans.

Great adaptation of Dickens and great acting- keeps your interest and wish it was actually part of a longer series!

An excellent adaptation of Charles Dickens novels combined into a 20 part series (each 28 minutes in length) of mystery, drama, and a bit of comedy. Superbly performed by top actors of all ages. A MUST SEE!!!
