I loved this book! A richly imagined portrayal of two brilliant women, a passionate love affair, the FDR White-house, America in the 1930's and '40's.
Eleanor Roosevelt and reporter Lorena Hickock were very close friends during Franklin Roosevelt's time in the White House. Bloom tells their story through the musings of "Hick" as she looks back on her life with Eleanor.

You are not just my port in the storm… You are the dark and sparkling sea and the salt drying tight on my skin, under a bright, bleaching sun…You are the little girls, carrying water in their red buckets, and you are the ruined sandcastles at sunset, gaudy with seaweed and gull feathers. You are the dawn, rolling back the dark until the beach glitters and the girls return with their buckets, holding hands.
