2.5 STAR Found this long and slow. Fast forward a lot of it. Acting seemed off at beginning but got better.

I felt this was more like the old 1950-60 Westerns. A simple story, reasonably played. Nice to see Kathy Baker again. Bill Pullman, eh, OK. I can believe the story line for the time period. Certainly better than what's been available on my TV stations.

I liked it a lot.

I got this movie because of Jim Caviezel. It is an hour and 45 minutes I will never get back.

The plot adequate, and the performances well good. It was the language in this movie that ruined it, even by Caviezel.

Skip this one.

I've always been a fan of westerns so it's nice to see that they are making a bit of a comeback. Bill Pullman plays his role well and I found the movie to be both interesting and enjoyable. Worth a watch.

A 60 something illiterate pacifist who was a loyal second fiddle to his murdered partner and best friend, must find resolve to set things right. An unusual depressing coming of age drama that ideology differences turned once best friends against each other during the construction of the Intercontinental railway.

Bill Pullman does an excellent job, and the story is interesting. However, if you are looking for an action packed Western, this is not your film. There are 2 action scenes, with most of the movie unfolding in a slow drama. Worth seeing, if you know what to expect and like drama.

Intro text:
The frontier environment is at first too strong for the man. He must accept the conditions which it furnishes or perish. Frederick Jackson Turner.
...Red Bluff, Montana 1889...
===
You leave Lefty in charge of our ranch, the place won't be here when we return.
===
Now, Lefty'll run this ranch just fine. You know he's ridden with me 40 years now, and...
-so has your horse.
===
A more loyal man than Lefty Brown hasn't walked this earth.
-Loyal isn't the same as capable. We need someone like Tom Harrah.
===
Well, I reckon you're gonna stand tall, or you ain't. I'll wager on the first.
===
I'm gonna get that son of a bitch, or I'm gonna die trying. My word, it ain't worth much... But on this, it is.
===
You're sure?
-Lefty's sure.

I can shoot.
-Well, ain't that something?
I can.
-There's a difference between shooting and drawing.
===
The man's my hero.
-Yeah? What kind of hero turns his back on his friends when they need him most?
===
Lefty...
-don't you Lefty me. You're forgetting you got that badge on your chest. If Edward was here, he'd say it means something.
===
Eddie was my friend. I tried to make him understand that this isn't the land it once was. Come on, tom. We're civilized now. Businesses thrive... Families travel in safety... And Indians no longer rape our wives.
===
Hell, I can't believe how low you think of me.
-You're not gonna tell me why.
Why? How 'bout you tell me? You're the one saying I done something I ain't.

That there piece of paper...
-You're saying that …that's worth more than the word of a man who's known you over half your life?
===
It was... it was nothing like I said it was, and that's me. That's Lefty Brown... The man who never got anything right in over 60-odd years.
===
He said I didn't need the bottle. He said we were strong. But he was wrong, of course. But he believed... Which is much more than most folks, so here's to you, Eddie.
===
Edward Johnson was a man of action. He was also a man of the land... And a great land, it is. Railroads crisscrossing plains and mountain... Connecting Atlantic to pacific. Cattle from Montana feeding Irishmen in New York. Iron, steel, oil... This great land of ours provides. All it asks for in return is order.
===
Just careful now. They ain't killers. They's just fools.
-Yeah, they're killers when they fxcking shoot us!
