A sassy retelling of Jane Eyre with ghosts and a lot of good-natured cleverness to make you laugh.

We all thought we knew the story of Jane Eyre, but we were missing quite a few important details. There were ghosts, and possessions, people we thought died actually lived, and we did not know the couples as they actually were. My Plain Jane gives us a different story of Jane Eyre. Ok, so this is book 2 in "The Lady Janies" series. The humorous writing style that I loved in book one is ever present throughout this novel and I loved it! This is a retelling of the classic "Jane Eyre," but with a twist, the main focus of this novel is not love but the fact that Jane Eyre can see ghosts, not only can she see ghosts but she is considered a "Beacon." Meaning that she can command ghosts and help them cross over into the after life. This plot twist from the classic leads to Epic adventures and funny paranormal encounters. The great thing about this series is that each novel is a completely different story, so you don't have to worry about reading them in order. You could start with this book if you wanted. Although I will say the 1st one My Lady Jane is defiantly my favorite, book three won't be released until 2020.

Review excerpt: "Sometimes a book comes along that is so fun, so unabashedly silly, and so clever that it makes you glad to be alive. Such is the case with 'My Plain Jane', which re-imagines 'Jane Eyre' in such a bizarre and gleeful fashion that even in the grip of my regularly scheduled holiday depression I was overcome with bliss."

Though the original is still my favorite, I enjoyed this adaption because of the supernatural elements incorporated into it, as well as the light tone and modern movie lines.

It was fun. The plot was fast-paced, but instead of enjoying it, it made it feel rushed. Jane's story kind of gets pushed to the side, and we really don't get know her as a character. I liked Charlotte and the ghost-hunters, but I felt that it didn't mesh that well with the characters. I kept waiting for the book to slow down and incorporate all the elements better, and for us to get to know the characters but it didn't. It was quite funny and the references to Jane Eyre were enjoyable. I would recommend reading Jane Eyre before reading this. Then again, you might like My Plain Jane better if you're not focusing on the Jane subplot and how it relates to the original. Enjoyable, but not something I would re-read or recommend.

Cute take on some of famous fictional characters we know. It wasn't scary, just goofy. But entertaining.

I thought My Lady Jane was hilarious, and this follow-up by the same authors, giving Jane Eyre a thorough reimagining, was really fun, too. It is definitely a case where, just as My Lady Jane was best enjoyed by people who knew at least some Tudor history, this is probably going to be appreciated most by fans of (or people who love to hate) Jane Eyre, but for that audience, this is fun and funny, and I’d recommend reading Lyndsay Faye’s Jane Steele (a totally genius reimagining of Jane Eyre where Jane is a serial killer) next.

Have you ever felt torn between reading Jane Eyre or watching Ghostbusters? If so this book is for you. My Plain Jane is an entertaining mash-up of history and the supernatural by way of Monty Python.

If you enjoy absurd humor and strong female protagonists this book is for you. The most surprising thing was how much it made me want to pick up the original for comparison. Great way to convince people to read the classics.

Keep an eye out for Lady Jane Grey and her husband from book one, My Lady Jane!
