Before the series, there was the movie. There are some amazing actors in this comedy horror and it's definitely worth a watch.

I watched this with a level of apprehension, worried that it wouldn't hold up to my initial memories 20+ years after first viewing it.

Delightfully, my worries were unfounded. It's just as campy, funny, and quote-worthy as I remember.

The movie that started it all. It's a fun, if cheesy first outing of the Valley cheerleader turned vampire slayer. This movie has a lot going for it, but it is uneven in its directing. Kristy Swanson, Luke Perry, David Arquette, and Hilary Swank were enjoyable in their roles, but the true gem was Pee-Wee himself, Paul Reubens. Reubens's take on the vampire Amilyn was the only character where I could see the snarky humor and underlying menace of characters from the tv show. Donald Sutherland and Rutger Hauer, both great actors in their own right, were wasted here. I don't think they could figure out whether they were supposed to take their material seriously. I know there were a lot of behind-the-scenes issues with this film, where the producers and director didn't understand what Joss Whedon was actually trying to do, which lead to a strange, uneven mix in the material. Again, Paul Reubens was the only actor who spoke to Joss Whedon about how to play the character, and it shows in how that character could easily have come from the tv show. The others, not so much. However, for all of that, the movie is enjoyable, if more on the comic side of things from the tv show.

This is the movie that the tv show was based on and it is completely different! This movie is hilarious with its snappy dialogue and tongue-in-cheek action. Buffy finds that her cheerleading lifestyle just isn’t the same when people start dying because of vampires. Much to her displeasure she turns out to be the chosen one, and accused of having a hairy mole, blech! Paul Reubens is also in this movie as an evil vampire henchman that just won’t die! Staff picks 2010.
