An excellent adventure, set in the furthest reaches of Tibet.

This book showed me that China still has Tibet on lock-down. There is very little freedom for the native Tibetan's and it reminds be a lot of East Berlin. I think this book will give readers some idea of what it's like to live in a part of the world where you are policed by a large nation that doesn't even allow you pictures of your religious leader. This was an amazing read.

A quick read with just enough detail about Buddhist culture and life in the Himalayas to hook the interest of upper elementary readers. After twelve year old Tash witnesses a man who sets himself on fire in protest of the Chinese government, her parents are imprisoned, forcing her to strike out on her own with a friend and two yaks to seek help from the Dalai Lama. Making tough decisions in the face of political upheaval is a prevalent theme throughout this book that will likely resonate with young readers regarding the current political strife in the news today.
