It's 1982, and the Dicksons move to a southern town where all the girls long for Farrah Fawcett type curls. Pre-teen Aurelie begs her parents for a perm hoping for a life-changing curly waves but the bored student/beautician accidentally sets the timer for too long. Now Aurelie is left as a gawky yet endearing young teenager trying to navigate junior high.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film and the acting of the young stars. The adults are fun to watch too.Obviously meant to be quirky in a Wes Anderson like way, the film does provide some insight into growing up and how youth look at things in their own special way. Growing up can be painful and to make it entertaining and amusing is walking a fine line. The director does it very well, getting authentic performances from the cast and makes for a fun viewing. Patricia Arquette, sporting love handles as a middle aged wife past her prime, carries her weight with nary a self conscience ounce, and almost steals the show.

This comedic film stars Rainn Wilson, Kaleigh Jo Keller, Patricia Arquette, and Michael Green amongst more, which brings out the charm of this film. Thirteen year old Aurelie wants to fit in at school by getting a perm, like all the other girls have. But, little does she know her parents try to save some money by bringing her to a beauty school that completely messes up her hair. The movie had some confusing plot points and dialogue moments that took away from the charm and humor of the film, but the movie still delivered a quaint and quirky story that many people can enjoy and relate to. I would rate this movie 3.5/5 stars. @The_Reviewer of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

An entertaining comedy even though it is ridiculous in so many ways. This movie is good for some laughs especially if you don’t take it seriously.
