"In this twisty psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Before, an actress plays both sides of a murder investigation. One out-of-work British actress pays the rent on her New York City apartment the only way she can: as a decoy for a firm of divorce lawyers, hired to entrap straying husbands. When the cops begin investigating one of her targets for murdering his wife--and potentially others--they ask her to lure the suspect into a confession. But with the actress pretending to be someone she isn't, differentiating the decoy from the prey becomes impossible--and deadly"-- Provided by publisher.

I'm not great at guessing twists, so I was so excited when I thought I knew all the twists and turns, but I really didn't. Those dark, unreliable narrators are so tricky to figure out!

While working as a paid decoy for divorce lawyers, Claire gets mixed up in a murder mystery page-turner that includes an attractive widower who might manipulate her to reveal her own shady past.

I don't believe you.
I don't believe the multiple twists that are more reminiscent of the shower episode in the tv show Dallas than anything remotely intriguing.
I don't believe dialogue-as-screenplay/script that begins as only mildly interesting before degenerating into silliness.
And I don't believe I really continued reading through to the last page hoping that, by some stroke of genius, something would redeem this novel.
Fair warned those who choose to believe.

Stars: ⭐⭐⭐

Intriguing format - a screenplay in the middle of a novel.

Claire is a struggling British actress living in New York City...she has no green card but plenty of ambition and talent. To help pay for schooling, she becomes involved with a firm where she entices married men to make advances on her...then shows their wives the footage. Not exactly honorable work, but it pays the bills. The job and her role in breaking up marriages is fine...until she meets Patrick...and then everything changes.

As we follow Claire on her journey, we are never quite certain: who is the hunter and who is the prey? Is anything as it seems?

Pros: If you like an unreliable’ll love this one.

Cons: The format, while original, was difficult to follow. Perhaps it was just not to my taste...I prefer descriptive writing rather than trying to visualize a screenplay format.

Personally, I enjoyed The Girl Before much much more than this one.

This is truly a twisted thriller! Who is guilty? Who is watching who? Who is the suspect? Who is working with police? Which story is real? Which one is the act? This story will capture your attention from the first page until the last. You will be lead down one street and you think that you will reach the end - and then the street will swerve and you are going in another direction, and soon you will not know what is real or what it not real. Put on your seatbelt and enjoy the ride. The journey will keep you up all night trying to get to the finish line and believe me it will be worth your time......

This is a twisted thriller filled with haunting dilemmas. Did he or didn't he? Will she or won't she? What is real and what is all part of the role? Who is the real suspect? The reader is sucked in from the beginning into this dark plot with a serial killer on the loose and Baudelaire coming to life. Claire is a British actress trying to revamp her career in NYC. She does some side work for an investigator to help expose husbands with cheating on their mind. A new assignment finds her inserting herself in the life of a suspected killer to get him to confess. It is a cat and mouse game reminiscent of the series "The Following" and will be a book you don't soon forget.
