Absolutely over-the-top military action, typically a handful of Chinese special forces against vastly superior numbers of Islamic terrorists. Lengthy close combat machine gun battles, hand grenades, rocket-propelled grenades, snipers, all sorts of vehicles including ships, attack boats, helicopters, tanks, and every sort of car and truck getting shot up and blown up. In the midst of all that, there are a number of relatively brief scenes of strategy and tactics discussions and decisions, and emotional confrontations with understandable fears, wounds, deaths, and the prospect of continuing the particular mission, which changes in mid-course every time. In EVERY combat scene, time running out is a key feature. And as time runs out, the odds against surviving, let alone succeeding keep dwindling. Main mission goals are dealing with cargo ship pirates, locating enough stolen uranium to make 30 bombs, saving dozens of hostages, saving a close friend, and saving the wife of a Chinese president. I don't think i have ever seen so many rounds fired in a movie, and maybe not so many explosions, either. Thus my "over-the-top" comment. That said, one might assume that the extremely graphic action makes it a sure thing for 5 stars. I only gave it 3 stars because the odds against them were consistently too extreme for the heroes to accomplish what they did, let alone survive with so few losses. The closing credits say this was based on a true incident. But it was NOT just one incident. In Chinese language with English subtitles.

Over 2hrs of PRC army propaganda come close to torture, to me anyway. If you're in for the action & explosion / bloodshed & gore / screaming & yelling, etc, "Operation Red Sea" has more than enough to satisfy your heart's desire. Just don't expect any non-propagandistic script or relatable character. For those who aren't military / firearm fanatics, skip it.

It is the latest Chinese military operational battle extravaganza film with its main theme similar to Wolf Warrior II (2017) and Operation Mekong (2016.) While familiar plot that focused on soldiers' heroics, its CGI and production sets are of world class artistry. The last scene in South China Sea is no fiction anymore. Per Wiki:

The film is loosely based on the evacuation of the 225 foreign nationals and almost 600 Chinese citizens from Yemen's southern port of Aden during late March in the 2015 Civil War. The film is in similar style to that of Operation Mekong.

It serves as the highlight film presented to audiences as a gift for the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, as well as the party's 19th National Congress. This film is said to be "China's first modern naval film". The film has grossed USD$579 million, making it currently the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2018 and second-highest-grossing ever in China.

A soldier should know about sacrifice. And that he may never return. They should understand the soldiers' duty. You can tell them the truth. You're the captain, not their parent. Don't take all of this personally or the stress will kill you.
You've not been home in a long time.
-We're fighting... for a better life.
Albert, you know better than anyone why I left those big newspapers. It's because they always do selective reporting and covered up the truth! When you hired me, you said--
- No!
I have the guts to go expose the truth.
- No!
That's why I'm here!
- No! I appreciate your tenacity, but there are limits.
Did you forget what you stand for?
-I definitely won't risk the lives of my staff!
But there are things that are more important than life.
Attention! This is Chinese Navy. You're about to enter Chinese waters. Please turn around immediately! Attention! This is Chinese Navy. You're...
