"The million-copy ... bestseller, revised and updated with an entirely new Financial Empowerment Plan, plus a bonus chapter on investing."--Back cover.
Why is it that women have such a complicated, dysfunctional relationship with money? Orman hits home with advice that is at once intuitive and pragmatic. Her 2018 financial plan provides straight-talk for these tough times, when none of us can afford to sit back and relax when it comes to our money. -- adapted from publisher info
"Suze Orman, the country's most trusted expert on personal finance, offers women the opportunity to--once and for all--give themselves what they have always deserved: financial peace of mind. The time has never been more right for women to take control of their finances. The lessons, revelations, and shocks of the past few years have made it clear that standing in our truth is the only way to care for ourselves, our families, and our finances. With her signature mix of insight, compassion, and practical advice, Suze equips women with the financial knowledge and emotional awareness to overcome the blocks that have kept them from acting in the best interest of their money--and themselves. Whether you are single or in a committed relationship, a successful professional, a worker struggling to make ends meet, a stay-at-home parent, or a creative soul, Suze offers the possibility of living a life of true wealth, a life in which you own the power to control your destiny. At the center of this fully revised and updated edition, Suze presents an all-new Financial Empowerment Plan, designed to get you to a place of emotional and financial security as quickly as possible--because the most precious commodity women have is time. Divided into four essential components, the plan will teach you how to: protect yourself; spend smart; build your future; give to others. Also included is a bonus chapter on investing--for those who are living by Suze's unbreakable financial ground rules and ready to learn how to invest with confidence. Women & Money speaks to every mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, and wife. It gives readers the opportunity to tap into Suze's unique spirit, people-first wisdom, and unparalleled appreciation that for women, money itself is not the end goal. It's the means to living a full and meaningful life."--Dust jacket.

Life lesson - a woman needs her own money, and can never have too much. "Love many, trust few, and always paddle your own canoe." - A wise auntie

Published in 2007 before the massive financial crisis of 2008--so I wonder if Ms. Orman now has an updated book and would be more cautious about market investments (there's a hard sell for TD Ameritrade accounts). There are pros and cons to this book; I ranked it lower because her tone at times is too directive/overbearing and she starts off extremely simply with asking women to open checking/savings accounts (which, to me, seems like a rite of passage at age 18). I think at this point in our society, women are savvy enough to know they need to consider their finances long-term. On positive notes, she does rightfully emphasis that women need to rely on themselves for retirement; pensions are gone. She offers helpful calculators on her website. The latter part of the book goes beyond simple savings and into tactics for long-term financial health and security. I learned a new tactic in revocable trusts as an important partner to one's will--and that you can avoid the costs and length of probate court.

My book club selected this book. It helped me to become more aware of my finances and did a lot to identify some mental traps that I fall into as a woman. I hate that some of them were true (the fact that women don't watch out for themselves financially, don't discuss finances with their partner, don't save for retirement, loan money to people they shouldn't, etc.). I think some of the recommendations are good (basic things like "pay off your credit card," etc.), but I think working with a certified financial planner is something I will do to tailor a plan to my own personal situation. Suze's bold personal story is inspiring and her advice to develop characteristics of a wealthy woman is straight forward and wise.

Interesting to note that TD Ameritrade, together with Schwab and E-trade, and whatever top brokerages still exist, make up the top banks' and top hedge funds' "internalization business" - - whereby they purchase, on an almost daily basis, 100% of the trades from those brokerages, and match them internally on their own computer systems. What they are doing, is in effect, both controlling the public or retail stock trades, while having the foreknowledge to mount trades upon trades based upon the retail stock trades market. In other words, EVERYTHING is rigged, but you will not be hearing that from Orman.

This book has a lot of solid financial advice specific to women, but I was a little put off by what I consider to be "sales pitches". The author often refers to additional content that is available on the Suze Orman website, however, when you visit the site, it directs you to multiple "kits" that you can purchase for upwards of $30 instead of offering free material to readers. If you're just starting out or trying to get a handle on an overall financial plan, this may not be the right title for you.
