John Grisham returns to Clanton, Mississippi, to tell the story of an unthinkable murder, the bizarre trial that follows it, and its profound and lasting effect on the people of Ford County. Pete Banning was Clanton's favorite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, father, neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning in 1946. he rose early, drove into town, walked into the Church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell. As if the murder wasn't shocking enough, it was even more baffling that Pete's only statement about it--to the sheriff, to his defense attorney, to the judge, to his family and friends, and to the people of Clanton--was "I have nothing to say. " And so the murder of the esteemed Reverend Bell became the most mysterious and unforgettable crime Ford County had ever known.

This was one of his best books I have read and I am sure I have not missed one. There was a twist to the ending loved it

This is a sad and depressing story.

The middle third of the book is a history lesson on the human experience during the Bataan Death March.

I really don't understand the bad reviews (below). I think this is a really good read. I think the war was a bit long, but I enjoyed the story.

Had to sit on this review for a few days. Part 1 I thought it was going to be a 5 star rating and then Part 2 I couldn't understand some of the comments until halfway through Part 2 and I started to understand. Then it seemed to pick up a bit and then I found it disappointing.

I don't understand all the naysaying about this book. I admit it's been years since I've read a John Grisham but I felt that this book was very provoking, although towards the middle I thought that it was being dragged out too long. And that's because the ending was so unexpected and startling. I'd recommend it.

worst Grisham book ever.
total waste of time.
Would offer a full review but for two things
this book doesn't deserve the effort, and to explain fully why the book sucks would take a spoiler.
the 1st third is pretty good, the 2nd third is completely pointless and should have been it's own book, and the 3rd part of the book he mailed it in and ended with a stupid plot resolution.

juts garbage. gave it one star only for the opening third of the book.

I've read all of Grisham's book and this is the worst. It's an author experimenting with a new technique. Plot is poorly developed, if there is one. If this was your first Grisham, you would not read another. The best I could give it would be 3/10.

Author should have retired from writing about seven books ago!

ASOLUTELY HORRIBLE...what a waste of a good tree to publish something this inane and pointless. I have probably read every John Grisham book published and have enjoyed most. If I were Grisham, I would be ashamed to put associate my name with this book. Did he really write this??

Very disappointing read. Beginning was attention grabbing as usual, skimmed over the middle regarding WW11, ending was anti climatic after an interesting legal battle.
