"Although beautiful young widow Phoebe, Lady Clare, has never met West Ravenel, she knows one thing for certain: he's a mean, rotten bully. Back in boarding school, he made her late husband's life a misery, and she'll never forgive him for it. But when Phoebe attends a family wedding, she encounters a dashing and impossibly charming stranger who sends a fire-and-ice jolt of attraction through her. And then he introduces himself ... as none other than West Ravenel."

#5 OF THE RAVENELS BOOKS

JessicaGma May 30, 2019

It was fun and fluffy - not a bad way to involve the various series, but as usual, the older generation proves to be more intriguing. The old hubby did seem to be a real downer, but I feel it's accurate in dealing with someone who is chronically ill (in the olden times, you see). A lovely read for a weekend.

As always I love Lisa Kleypas. I love that we are in the same "universe" as all her other novels and I adore all the references to past characters and the little updates on their lives. This was a light, fun story with strong, smart women and men who are pretty "ahead of their time" in terms of women empowerment (ha, ha). I'm curious who our next heroine and lady will be! I'm sure they will be people we have already met but who?

Not much content. Lots of fluff; lots of description, lots of people we've already met in other books. A couple steamy sex scenes but not much else of interest. A dollar-grabbing rip-off, imho.

The title puzzled me almost to the end of the book. I have read the Wallflowers books and liked them, but it has been a while, and Phoebe’s father was not introduced until late in the story. His scenes were some of my favorites, however.

West was funny. He was great father material from the beginning. And, not very often in any romances does the hero recognize his love so early. The idea that Phoebe was prejudiced against him for bullying her sickly husbad for one year of school was pretty thin; I disliked Henry, even though he was dead. And Phoebe deserved a medal for putting up with his mother.

Finally, I appreciated that Phoebe was not an “English Rose.” Her hair was RED.

It's the weekend and I wanted a Christopher Elbow equivalent of a biblio-bonbon. And I got it with this book. I'm not usually a romance reader, but this was a charming book. It's fairly short by romance standards and a cross over for two of the author's series, The Ravenels and the Wallflowers. Readers who are all caught up with both series will definitely get more delight out of this book than someone coming at the series with no knowledge at all of the players (like me). The conflict between the lovers is a little thin, but no matter, the humor and whimsy of the story will be the lasting appeal for the readers.

Really enjoyed the humor in this book! Nice historical details. Lovely to "see" favorite characters again. Definitely an improvement on "Hello Stranger" but falls a smidgen short of Kleypas's greatest hits.

A really good story, better than Devil in Spring, insight into changes to the farming world and loved the inclusion of characters from some of the other books especially Sebastian and Evie, their story was the very best of the Wallflower series.

I waited 8 mths for this release and felt it was going to be a bestseller as West Ravenal was the funniest character of this family however I was disappointed sorry. There really wasn't a story to be had except for Pheobe's estate which was easy to figure out. There was too much writing spent on explaining what rooms looked like in detail which I'm not interested in. I enjoyed the reference to the cat, West's demons, but the story could have been much better.
