This is one of those books that I have trouble reviewing. On one hand, this series is entertaining, fun, and light. I really enjoy the world and the possibilities it holds. On the other, it is filled with cliched characters (the angry bad boy, the fish-out-of-water *special* girl) borrowed plot lines (hello, Harry Potter) and overdone themes. Clary borders on annoying at times, and Jace constantly being referred to as beautiful gets old fast. I'm way more interested in Alec and Magnus and the progression of their relationship, to be honest. Give me more of Simon, even, after he's over Clary. I'm also sick of minor characters being introduced and being summarily killed off to try to make the novels deep and emotional. There's one death here (I won't spoil it) that should have been absolutely devastating- but the way it's written and the character was dealt with, I honestly didn't care at all- and it should not be that way. I do enjoy the mixing of angels, werewolves, fae, vampires, shadowhunters and demons. I will be moving on to Infernal Devices and Dark Artifices- perhaps those characters will sit better with me, and the writing might improve as the series goes on. I liken this series to candy- it tastes great, but there's no substance to it under the surface. It ranks right up there with Twilight. You've got me, Clare, but I'm not entirely happy about it.
