Bébé Day by Day

100 Keys to French Parenting

Despite the fact that "Bébé Day by Day" reads like a Coles Notes version of its prequel, "Bringing Up Bébé," the new book crystallizes the french parenting philosophy. Easily read in an hour or two, what this handy reference guide lacks in originality it makes up for in accessibility. Both of Druckerman's books have influenced my own parenting through their emphasis on creating a "cadre:" freedom within a firm set of boundaries. Treat the child as a member of the family, not as the center of the family. Give the child responsibilities that contribute to family life. Teach your child self-control by insisting on polite waiting. Respect a child's autonomy and independent play time. Ultimately, this book offers a look at a calm home of loving, assertive parents who don't shy from saying, "C'est moi qui décide."
