In a clear departure from her fairytale-based novels for youth, McKinley’s foray into adult fiction takes us into an alternate futuristic world where cities are still recovering from the Voodoo Wars and humans live in fear of the Others – vampires, werewolves, demons and the like – who lurk in the fringes of society. Rae “Sunshine” Seddon is a young baker restless with her simple life until she finds herself unexpectedly allied with the mysterious vampire Constantine against his mortal enemy Bo. She soon realizes that she’s not quite as normal as she thinks, after a number of life-threatening situations force her to rediscover the forgotten powers she has inherited from her father’s magical family. More “Buffy” than Anne Rice, McKinley has created a richly detailed world that just calls out for a sequel.
