A police procedural novel with Jimmy Perez the main detective working in Shetland. A group of friends attend a wedding party on the isolated island, the home of the bridegroom. One of them gets murdered. These friends have a complicated relationship, but that doesn't stop Jimmy from tracking down their past. The background of these characters makes for interesting reading. Very small clues are inserted about another odd relationship. The plot is intriguing due to the central figure of a child ghost, also murdered on the island. What was frustrating to me as a reader was the isolation of the island from services like a coroner/pathologist and crime scene personnel who had to be flown in or ferried to the island. Waiting for them to arrive and then waiting for them to give the results of their investigation I was glad that the author could keep my interest with details of the personal lives of her characters. The description of the scenery of the cliffs, the sea, the tides, the crofts also add to the charm of this novel.
