This movie is gorgeous. It has some simply stunning and breath-taking animation and scenes. The movie is subtitled, so it requires you to focus on the film. Which is honestly perfect because this story rewards close viewing. The characters are compelling. The story is at once simple and complex: it is a story of trying to make up for a mistake and the consequences of trying to change the natural order of things. Personally, I felt I might have been missing some cultural context- the movie is from China and elements that are brand-new to me might have different or longer cultural meaning to its place of origin. But it is well worth the watch, AND the library has it available streaming on Overdrive, one of our online resources. - Cassandra J., St. Anthony Library

I make sure to stay tune on any showing through the PBS Channel for this series. I love Branda Blethyn's "Vera"character. Simple, funny, and most of all a clever Chief Inspector. She shows viewers that women can lead any team without any need to show it through fancy clothes, and the need to look pretty. That simply being herself, makes her the best in her job. - Honee C., Edina Library

Recently on Twitter someone threw down the Best Darcy gauntlet: Colin Firth (in 1995) or Matthew Macfadyen (in 2005). Both appear drenched to the skin in their respective films, shirts clinging tightly to their broad shoulders; both gaze soulfully into Lizzie Bennet's fine eyes; both fight this attractionc -- but here's where the actors diverge. My first Darcy, and what I thought would be my one true Darcy after watching the 1995 series faithfully once a year, is Firth. Then I revisited the 2005 film and I find myself leaning toward Macfadyen. Firth's Darcy fell for Lizzie after repeated exposure. The chemistry was there but the focus was more on the social constraints of that time period. In 2005, Macfadyen's eyes wandered over Lizzie and stopped the very first time he saw her at a country ball. And that fist clench after he handed her into a carriage, like he could feel it tingle from her touch! That's both romantic and passionate. The 2005 film focuses more sympathetically on people and their frailties, and made the romance more compelling. Both are marvelous adaptations, but when it comes to Darcy I have switched camps. However, if it comes down to the best Lizzie, Jennifer Ehle in 1995 all the way! - Jody W., Web and Online Services

Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) is a single mother who runs a parenting vlog . She strikes up a friendship with Emily (Blake Lively), a fellow parent at her son's school. When Emily goes missing, Stephanie decides to investigate her disappearance. This movie is a cross between thriller and comedy and I liked it more than I thought I would. The story is a bit convoluted but it is campy and fun. I also found the lead actresses charming. Overall, it is very enjoyable. A good choice for a Saturday night. - Molly R., Wayzata Library

This movie should really be a cult classic. It has a fantastic cast, it’s funny, and it’s one of the best unintentional period pieces from the 90s. The story follows Krysten Ritter and Alicia Silverstone (yes, really) as two forever 20- something vampires turned by Sigourney Weaver. Malcolm McDowell plays a Vlad Tempest who uses knitting as a way to work out his impaling tendencies. Wallace Shawn, Richard Lewis, and even Larry Wilmore are just a few of the actors that will make you go "wait, was that...?" in this film. Hilarious, with nice touches to vampire lore (how do you do your make-up if you can't see yourself in a mirror?) this movie is most definitely worth watching! - Cassandra J., St. Anthony Library

Greta Gerwig's directorial debut “Lady Bird" tells the story of a teen girl on the cusp of adulthood. The year is 2002 and we watch as 17-year-old Christine McPherson, or “Lady Bird" as she calls herself, navigates her senior year at her Catholic school in Sacramento, CA, which she calls “the Midwest of California." She argues with her mother, applies to college, dates boys and explores sex, acts in a high school play, goes to prom and tries to figure out who she is and where she belongs. These things are rather ordinary high school experiences and therein lies the power of this film. It takes the ordinary life of a teenage girl seriously. There are only a handful of films that portray teen girls as realized, thinking, feeling and fully formed individuals and this is one of them. It's a truly wonderful coming of age story. - Molly R., North Regional Library

Sally Hawkins does a brilliant job portraying Anne Elliot, the dutiful daughter in a family of self-absorbed, vain ingrates who forced her to give up her first (and true) love, Captain Frederick Wentworth. Wentworth survives the war and returns a rich man, one who still nurses the pain of his earlier rejection when he runs into Anne once again. Actor Rupert Penry-Jones manages to balance the Captain's natural good nature with a very believable streak of petty hurt that lets you know he still very much cares for Anne. In turn, Hawkins wrenches your heart with the pain she feels over what happened with her Captain and her certainty that she has lost him forever. A wonderful adaptation of my favorite Jane Austen novel. - Jody W., Web and Online Services

I have watched many music documentaries, and this is one of the best. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down a Dream was directed by Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon, Mask). It clocks in at around four hours, but is well worth the somewhat considerable time commitment. I recommend breaking it up into two or more viewings to savor it; I watched an hour at a time. If you don't already miss Tom Petty, you will after watching this. You might as well go ahead and request some of his CDs, too, since the documentary is sure to inspire further listening. - Bridgett M., Hopkins Library

Be forewarned- this movie does not have a fantastic plot. Nor does it have the most well-developed of characters. But what it does have is some of the most spectacular choreography of any golden age musical. Many of the set pieces take place on ice, and the camera tricks, while dated now, are quite charming and worth watching. The actors do their level best to breathe some life into the stock characters, and you'll find yourself humming along to some of the songs. If you like your musicals beautiful, fun, and cheesy this is the movie for you. - Cassandra J., St. Anthony Library

Sing Street starts as a story about an Irish boy putting a band together to impress a girl, but he soon realizes that music is a much bigger part of him than he ever knew. The music they make as well as the soundtrack is uplifting, catchy and entirely reflective of the 1980's era the movie is set in. John Carney (Once, Begin Again) makes his strongest movie yet as he weaves together a story about young love, family strife and chasing your dreams. - Antonio B., Minneapolis Central Library

When I first heard the news that "Fargo" was being developed into a TV series, I was skeptical. I'm a huge Coen Brothers fan, and their sublime, darkly comic noir is one of their best. And then somehow, miraculously, the TV show actually worked. It was good, really good. Fantastic performances and amazing cinematography abounded. Each season told a self-contained story of winter, blood, greed, and things spinning horribly out of control. For my money, Year Two was the best with Bokeem Woodbine's Mike Milligan stealing every scene he's in, but every season has been thoroughly enjoyable. This show is necessary viewing for lovers of crime and hotdish. - Tony H., Web and Online Services

Animated children's movies about Christmas are a dime a dozen but Arthur Christmas stands out above all of them. Produced by the iconic British animation studio Aardman Animations (Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep) this movie follows different members of the Santa Claus family as they try to save Christmas. They may or may not succeed but they do all learn something meaningful about themselves and grow together as a family. There are plenty of jokes for both kids and adults to enjoy, but most importantly this movie just warms your heart. - Antonio B., Minneapolis Central Library
