Winifred Cunningham, the adopted daughter of a portrait painter, forms a close friendship with Owen Ware and anticipates a possible marriage proposal from him. When she is introduced to Owen's older brother, Nicholas Ware, a cavalry colonel and the second son of the late Earl of Stratton, tensions arise between Winifred and Nicholas due to their contrasting personalities. Over the course of a summer spent at Ravenswood, repeated encounters lead them to reassess their initial impressions of one another. Both characters face existing social expectations and potential marriage arrangements, as well as family obligations, which complicate their developing relationship. The novel explores themes of attraction, duty, and societal convention.
